A guide to Taiwan

October 2, 2017

Taiwan is truly a magical place, isn’t it? I have never spoken to any one that has been to Taiwan and didn’t like the place. In fact, many of them would end up going back to Taiwan at least once a year and with the huge range of activities available in Taiwan, who would be surprised.

Before getting started on your adventure, make sure that you stay connected while you are in Taiwan. With a wide selection of telecommunication companies offering tourist SIM card, it is easy to feel overwhelmed with the number of choices, a safe bet in my opinion would be the Far Eastone prepaid SIM card.

Far Eastone is not only ranked number 1 among all telco companies in Taiwan but also owns the most 2600mHZ cellular towers, so you can be assured that the connection will always be stable and internet speed will be fast.

For all your social media and communication needs, Far Eastone Prepaid SIM card offers unlimited 4.5G high speed data access at only NT$300 (approximately S$13.50)!

Their prepaid sim card is easily purchasable at both Terminal 1 and 2 of Taoyuan International Airport.

For those of you who is planning a trip down to Taiwan for the first time or if you are looking for inspiration on your next trip to Taiwan, these are my top Must Do in Taiwan!

Xi Men Ding 西門町

If you have never been to XiMenDing , you can’t say that you have truly been to Taipei, Taiwan. Think of it as the Orchard Road of Taipei, this is a shopping haven housing everything you need to attract the youngsters, from the typical shopping centers, fashion outlets, bars and restaurants to street performances, there really is something for everyone in XiMenDing.

Ximending is accessible via exit 6 of the Taipei Metro Ximen Station (Bannan Line and Songshan-Xindian Line)

Ps. If you are at XiMenDing, you have got to try out their Ah Zong Mian Xian! Their inexpensive yet tasty bowl of Mee Sua and pig intestine is a favorite among locals and tourists alike.

Shilin Night Market 士林夜市)

Located a stone’s throw away from Jiantan Station, Shilin Night market is one of the largest night market in Taiwan.

If you are looking to shop till you drop or to eat till you can’t walk, you just can’t go wrong with Shilin Night market.

For the foodies, a few of the must-tries would be their stinky toufu, oyster omelet, giant fried chicken, and of course the creation that took the world by storm a few years ago, the bubble tea.

For the shopaholics, you would be pleased to know that there are plenty of good deals for clothes here. The shopkeepers are really friendly and are usually open to lowering the prices if you are looking to buy more than one piece (think Bangkok).

Tamsui 淡水老街

When you are done with exploring Taipei, Tamsui is 40 minutes away from Taipei but fret not as it is well accessible by MRT. For budding photographers, you will find Tamsui to be a delight as it houses a variety of cultural and architectural attractions. In here you will find architectural influences from western colonial, Japanese to Native Taiwanese origins.

If you are exploring Tamsui with your partners, do remember to check out Fisherman’s Wharf  (渔人碼头). Famous for their gorgeous sunset, it will mark a beautiful end of the day for you and your loved ones.

Beitou Hot Springs 北投溫泉

Filled with both public and private baths, there are so many options for those of you who relish dipping and want to enjoy the benefits of the hot spring. The three options you will be able to get at Beitou are the iron sulphur hot spring (which I personally recommend) , green sulphur hot spring and white sulphur hot spring.

Getting to Beitou Hot Springs should be a breeze as hot springs are available at both XinBeiTou Station and BeiTou Station.

After a good dip in the hot springs, you can take a walk around the area and you will find a wide variety of food options to fill up your stomach. A hot favorite that you can try out would be the Tai Ho Dian Hotpot located at Xinyi Road, which offers fresh food with sumptuous soup base at reasonable prices. An excellent dinner choice indeed!
